Old Technology Combined  With New.

Tornado Locomotive

British Railways built the last steam locomotive in

1960. The A1 Steam locomotive Trust was founded

in 1990 to build an all new steam locomotive based

on the LNER Peppercorn Class A1 design last built

in 1949.

The project to build the new locomotive from scratch,

employing modern manufacturing techniques started

in 1994. £3 million pounds later and many years of

hard work in Darlington the all new Tornado movedTornado Close up

under her own steam on 29th July 2008.

Tornado was approved for main line passenger

operation and she hauled her first passenger trip

on 31st January 2009. Theoretically capable of

100 miles per hour Tornado is not expected to

leave the main line for ten years.

Tornado's exterior coatings employ modern paint

technology designed to withstand a harsh, fast

speed environment constantly exposed to the

elements.

Viaton Airwhite barytes was incorporated in the steam engine's surface coating. We are sure the paint finish will last for many years.
