Viaton is located in an area which has a history of lead and mineral mining going back thousands of years. The current manufacturing site was founded on the Golconda lead mine which in recent times was used for the extraction of Barytes.

The Viaton operation was established by mining lead and barytes in the early part of the 20th Century.
Gells Adit in the Via Gellia was a typical local reasonably extensive lead mine exhibiting fine stone stempling and some nicely developing natural flowstone since working ceased.
